Aces Drop Season Opener

The Alexandria Aces suffered a loss to start their 2018 campaign to the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 8-3, as Turner Davis, the catcher for the Thunderbolts, lit the way with a two run homerun.  Wyatt Rush (Lansing CC) the starter for the Aces started things off pleasantly with a 6 pitch first inning.  The Aces were able to score the first run of the ball game, 1-0 after one. It wasn’t all bad for the Aces as Eric Lansinger (UNC-Charlotte) roped an RBI to send home the only returning Ace from last season Ethan Cady. After taking the lead, it seemed like the Thunderbolts decided to show up and play.  An errant throw by Kris Kremer allowed Thunderbirds DH Friese to score from second and really opened the door for Silver Springs-Takoma.  Turner Davis, the catcher for the Thunderbolts, added to the productive inning, hitting a two-run home run to make the score 3-1 at the end of the second. The Bolts continued to capitalize in the third by adding two more runs; one being from Jack Schroeder’s two out double, closing the 3rd leading 5-1.  The Aces came out in the 4th determined to make it a ball game by adding two runs of their own most notably on yet another Eric Lansinger RBI double cutting the lead to 5-3.  However, those were the last runs the Aces were able to score in the game as the Thunderbolts took full control of the ball game after that.

Yash Rane the starting pitcher for the Thunderbolts, from Lehigh, who did allow three runs through four innings found his sweet spot by striking out nine batters through five innings of work.  The bullpen for the Thunderbolts took full control from there anchored by lefty Teddy Blumenauer who struck out all 6 batters he faced consecutively.  From there, Kieran Garner retired the last three batters to close the door on any chance of an Aces comeback.

“As I told the boys, ‘you guys need to make your adjustments’,” said first year Head Coach Chris Berset, who made his head coaching debut today. “If your approach (to the plate) is not working you need to do something differently. If it looks harder you need to change your swing up, shorten up, and go from there. Luckily, we get to play tomorrow.”
