Former Game Day Staff Member Headed to Independent Baseball

Patrick O'ConnelDuring 2014 and 2015, Patrick O’Connell spent part of each summer working as a member of the Alexandria Aces Game Day Staff. Now after graduating from Ohio University, Patrick has been able to parlay his Aces’ experience into a Stadium Operations position for the 2017 season with the Southern Maryland (Waldorf, MD) Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League. The Blue Crabs, who play 70 home games at Regency Furniture Stadium, typically feature a roster that includes at least a handful of former Major League ballplayers working towards another opportunity to play in the American or National League. Patrick’s duties will include assisting the Director of Stadium Operations with stadium maintenance and upkeep, and assisting with merchandise sales in the Blue Crabs souvenir store, selling tickets at the box office and supporting outreach events in the local community.

Patrick credited the Aces for giving him an opportunity to learn stadium operations. “The two summers I spent with the Alexandria Aces is an experience I will never forget. The Aces and their staff gave me opportunity to learn all aspects of working for a sports organization from sponsorship and ticket sales to game day operations. I can’t thank them enough for preparing me to continue my career working in the sports industry. Patrick’s 2015 General Manager, Lou Nolan, further commented, “Patrick was key to the functioning of the 2015 Game Day Staff. Whether selling tickets, filling in as Public Address Announcer, or just teaching the rookie set of interns the fine points of working an Aces home game at Frank Mann Field, Patrick provided a knowledgeable and steady presence each night.” Nolan went on to say, “Aces Manager David DeSilva works tirelessly to prepare his players for bigger and better achievements when they return to their college teams. Having former players drafted or signed by Major League or independent teams is rewarding. Likewise, it is rewarding to have Game Day Staff given an opportunity to pursue their sports management dreams. Knowing Patrick has earned his position with the Blue Crabs speaks well of the Aces commitment to prepare and help the staff get their chance to continue in sports.”

Congratulations Patrick and good luck!
